Film Radar: The Chaser (Chugyeogja, 2008)

This past summer in Korea there was a major box office smash from relatively unknown director Hong-jin Na. The film is such a success that an American remake is already in talks (ala Infernal Affairs – The Departed) and it sounds like the usual suspects Leonardo DiCaprio and Screenwriter William Monahan are slated to make it happen. I’d say to make sure to check this one out before the remake actually surfaces. This film strongly feels of a Korean New Wave birthchild and although much of the motifs and themes lie on the surface, there is still enough depth here to play with. I’d say it’s a must see for thrill seekers and followers of Korean New Wave cinema. I give it a 4/5 rating.

Film Radar: Secret Sunshine (Milyang, 2007)

I recently took a look at Secret Sunshine (Milyang) from acclaimed Korean director Chang-dong Lee and I was floored to say the least. I’m not sure I was floored in a good way or bad way, or if you can even call it either. What I do know is this is a film that needs to be seen. The acting, cinematography, script, and direction are all superb (leading actress Do-yeon Jeon took home the best actress award at Cannes). The issue is the extremely heavy subject matter and the questions the director askes us to ponder. They’re the type of questions I love to see raised but often I’m surprised that they are actually being discussed in public. I give this film a 4.5/5 rating.
